Hennummusikken is a small-town community band (janissary) from Tranby, in
Lier, Norway.
Tranby is approximately 35 km from the Norwegian
capital, Oslo, and about 10 km from Drammen.
Our conductor is Georgi Deltchev.
Currently we have about 45 musicians, male and female. The age of the musicians
spans from 15 to 80 years. Many of the members started their music career in
school marching bands, and has been playing with different bands and orchestras
ever since.
Hennummusikken was founded in 1897 and is the oldest existing band in
Lier.
The
picture shows some of the instruments used at this time. These instruments are
now the property of the local historical society, Lier
Historielag, at Lier Bygdetun.
From the start, one of the main assignments was playing at dance nights.
Another was participation in the celebration of the Norwegian national day,
the 17th of May.
In
the beginning there were 8 musicians in the band. As for most amateur bands and orchestras, the number of active
musicians has varied over the years. In the early sixties there were just a few
musicians left, and after a while the musical activity ceased. In 1982 the instruments
belonging to Hennummusikken were transferred to the school band at Nordal
Elementary School, Hennummusikken was formally closed down.
Six years
later, Hennummusikken was re-established the 20th August 1988 with 31
musicians.
As the band never had a marching banner, one was made for the
celebration of the 100th anniversary. The banner was first used for the
celebration of the Norwegian national day, 17th of May 1997.
In
2005 an emblem was formally established for Hennummusikken. The main
motive is a
helicon, drawn after one of the instruments from 1897.
Historically Hennummusikken has mostly performed their music inside a very small geographic area inside
Lier. However, the last years we have also visited several places outside
Norway:
2001: Bulgaria, the native country of our Conductor.
Concerts were performed in Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Haskovo.
2003: The Netherlands. We visited Malden, near Nijmegen.
2004: Spain. Visit to Manilva Beach, near Estepona. Concerts were performed in
Mijas, Ronda and in the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission in Calahonda.
2007: New visit to Bulgaria, with concerts in Varbitza,
Dimitrovgrad, Haskovo and Sofia.
Like most Norwegian amateur orchestras, Hennummusikken is performing as a concert orchestra
as well as a marching band.
Our music is mainly melodious, primarily pieces well known to the general public.
From 1994 Georgi Deltchev
has been our conductor. Under his musical leadership the quality of the band
has had a positive trend.
Georgi is a professional
musician and music teacher, originating form Bulgaria. He got his music
education at theAcademyofMusicinSofia. He is now living at Tranby,
Lier.
Our repertory spans from “Abba Golden Hits” and marches from different countries
on to “Elsa’s Procession to the
Cathedral” from “Löhengrin” by Richard Wagner.
Among several performances through the year, the following regular occasions have to be
mentioned:
Participation in the parades and public celebration of the Norwegian National Day, the 17th of
Mai.
Participate in the Cristmas tree lighting ceremonies at:
Hennumtorget
Hallingstadtunet
Mortenskollen, in the forest about 1 km up on the hill above Tranby.
This tradition started at the millennium new-years eve.
One of the Sundays in December we have our traditional Christmas concert
in Tranby Church, with well known Christmas Music from all over the world.
The last years, two separate performances has been necessary.
